Goldfields

Goldfields Accommodation & Holiday Rentals

Kalgoorlie is pure gold. This fabled gold mining town is both famous and infamous. You can see plenty of evidence of the romance, the violence and the hardships of the old days … but this is not a ghost town! It’s the thriving heart of a resources boom and everywhere there is evidence of modern wealth and the extraordinary scale and ingenuity of modern mining technology.

Kalgoorlie’s most famous social event is the week long Race Round. Come to Kal in September for the 100 year old Racing Round featuring the Kalgoorlie-Boulder Cup.

Spring is also the time for wildflowers – at this time the landscape is carpeted in brilliant colour.

Do the Super Pit tour and get a feel for what modern open pit mining is all about. Then visit the Goldfields museum and go underground at Hannan’s North to experience what it was like in the old days.

Take a stroll down Hannan Street and choose your evening meal venue as you move from pub to pub.

Langtrees 181 is a multimillion dollar bordello and tourist attraction. It is located at 181 Hay St and there are daily tours daily.

The Bush Two-Up School is 7 km from town and is where the traditional Australian gambling game of two-up of two-up was once frenetically enjoyed.

The Golden Quest Trail is a well designed tourist drive trail. For further info go to www.goldenquestrail.com.

Take a trip out through red dirt to Leonora, where the legendary Sons of Gwalia mine - whose first manager, Herbert Hoover, became President of the USA - is both a museum and a going concern. Many of the old miners huts have been restored and visitors are free to wander through them.

Stay overnight at the The Grand Hotel in the old ghost town of Kookynie. This is true outback Australia. In 1905 Kookynie was home to 1500 people and boasted six hotels, electric street lights, public baths, a brewery and many brick buildings. Today there is one pub and a resident population of 15!

On the way don’t miss Menzies and the extraordinary modern sculpture installation on Lake Ballard by English sculptor Antony Gormley. Gormley’s sculptures celebrate the connection of the land and people. The 51 figures on the lake are based on full body scans of local people.
