AUSTRALIA’S SOUTH WEST CAPES

Succumb to the lure of the Capes. This beautiful coastal region is only two and a half hours drive from Perth and boasts some of the best surfing beaches in the country. It is one of Australia’s finest wine producing regions with many wineries and fine dining venues, is a centre for fine furniture making and art practice, and has become the playground of Western Australia’s affluent.

Busselton is the gateway to the Capes region. The Jetty Underwater Observatory is one of Western Australia's most popular eco-tourism attractions. Busselton is also home to “The Swan Dive Wreck, a scuttled naval ship.

Dunsborough, west of Busselton, with its 30km of tranquil sandy beaches adjacent to many of the regions excellent wineries is a haven for the beachcomber and the epicure alike.

Cape Naturaliste Lighthouse still operates and its lovely turn of the century keepers' houses are well maintained. Tours operate at the lighthouse.

The Cape to Cape Walk follows the coast from Cape Naturaliste to Cape Leeuwin in the south. It is a 7-day walk following 124 km of coast, where nature still rules. With many access roads, it is easy to walk shorter sections of the track.

The limestone ridge of the Cape region hides a series of caves, many of which are open to the public. Ngilgi Cave is named because of its association with a rich Aboriginal legend describing the battle between a good spirit (Ngilgi) and an evil spirit (Wolgine). Ngilgi Cave offers visitors a stunning display of stalactite, stalagmite, helictite and shawl formations plus an interpretative area detailing the cave's rich history. Mammoth, Lake, and Jewel Caves are also open to the public.

Iconic West Australian destination Margaret River offers a wealth of wineries, eateries and galleries. Margaret River is a summer holiday boom town, but it’s buzzing at any time of year.

See world class surfing at the Margaret River Classic, get a ticket for part of the world class Leeuwin Concert series, visit the Wardan Aboriginal Cultural Centre or go on a Bush Tucker Tour.

Learn to Kite and Windsurf, learn about an ancient art at Eagles Heritage Raptor Wildlife Centre, take a cooking class or take a winery tour.

At the end of Caves Road is the old town of Augusta, a windswept and beautiful place, a fishing village, a holiday town, and a whale haven. The calm expanse of the Blackwood River estuary contrasts with the exciting turbulence of Cape Leeuwin where the Indian and Southern Oceans meet.

Here on the most Southern Westerly tip of Australia, Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse stands as a solitary sentinel. It still operates today and its history can be seen in tours of the light.

Whale watching is popular from June to September in Flinders Bay near Augusta.
